Bridge declared safe for motorists

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Construction manager reassures residents that bridge is safe to use on Cornelius Street.

With the rainy season on hand residents, who travel on Cornelius Street, are somewhat concerned that the bridge reconstruction project is not finished yet. Dawie de Bruin said he is worried about the safety of motorists who have to cross the bridge that collapsed earlier this year. “I know that a construction company has been working every single day underneath the bridge but they still aren’t done.”

His concern is whether or not the bridge will be able to withstand a big rain storm and the increased levels of water.

Mark Sullivan from Alasso Construction confirmed that the company is still busy with the project but reassured residents that the bridge is stable and strong enough to handle the rain storms. “We have completed the bridge’s support structure and we still have to do one or two minor things before the project can be completed. But residents can rest assured that the bridge is ready for the rainy season.”

Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin concluded by saying, “I’m glad to hear that the bridge is safe enough to be used by motorists during the rainy season as bridges take a heavy strain when the water levels increase.”
