Be on the lookout for the construction bakkie gang

ROODEPOORT – Robbers use construction bakkie and overalls to gain entry into homes.

Four men in a White Ford Ranger Club Cab, that looks like a construction vehicle, have been connected with a series of housebreaking and robberies in the Roodepoort area.

Florida Police spokesperson Captain Lydia Mtila Dikolomela said, “The vehicle has an orange flashing light on the roof and a ladder on the back. To round the look off, the robbers are wearing overalls and this helps them to slip into the homes of the unsuspecting victims.”

According to Capt Dikolomela, the spree started off in Quellerina about two weeks ago when the suspects committed robbery at a house in Maluti Avenue. “On Friday 24 October they popped up in Alexandra Street in Florida and they hit another house again on 28 October in Barry Hertzog Drive.”

She added that the modus operandi was the same in all three incidents and the victims were all tied up. “We noticed that they have a liking for electronic items as that is all that they have stolen thus far.”

Florida Blockwatch spokesperson Caleb Finn urged the public to keep an eye out for the vehicle as it is driving around without any number plates on. “If you notice the vehicle roaming around in your neighbourhood immediately contact your nearest police station.”

Dikolomela explained that the robbers hit between 1pm and 3pm in all three of the incidents. “Two of the robbers are armed and we want the domestic workers or anyone that is home during the day to make sure that all of the doors are locked and that they are vigilant and aware of what is going on around them.”

The incidents are currently being investigated by the Florida Police’s detective unit and anyone with more information can contact Sector 1 manager Warrant Officer Riaan van der Berg on 071 675 4455.
