110km walk for rhinos

ROODEPOORT – Resident puts on his walking shoes to try and raise a R100 000 for rhino awareness and the protection of the endangered species.

Local resident Francois Myburgh is a man on a mission to create awareness and raise funds for rhinos. Armed with sun screen, a first- aid kit, Energade, two cellphones, food for the trip and an umbrella he plans to walk 110 kilometres in total against rhino poaching.

“My route starts off at Witpoortjie on 4 November, where I will walk via Ontdekkers Road and through Randburg using Mendelssohn Road where I will end off in Rosebank about 24 kilometres later. The next day [5 November] I will head from Rosebank to Sandton a 5 km route and after that I will walk from Sandton to Midrand. The trip will end off with a long walk from Midrand to Skeerpoort that is about 64km that will take me about 13 hours.”

He explained that during his first ‘Walk for Rhinos’ he managed to raise R4 000, but this time he aims to raise R 100 000 for rhinos.

“I believe that any aid to help prevent poaching could save our rhinos, that’s why I’m trying to raise as much funds as possible for the endangered rhinos.”

Myburgh added that during his first trip he was extremely unfit but he hopes that the first one prepared him a bit for the second one. “I felt like giving up so many times during the first one but I kept on reminding myself that I’m walking for a purpose.”

The 110km route will take him four days to complete and he mentioned that he had already organised accommodation at various backpackers and the Magalies Park where he will rest his tired legs.

“People can like my Facebook page called www.facebook.com/wfrhinos or follow me on twitter @100kmRhinoWalk for updates on my route which might take longer than four days because of the unpredictable weather.”

He concluded and said, “I want to thank all of my sponsors who have helped me with all of my equipment and food. If anyone wants to make a donation they can contact me to obtain more details.”
