Ward 97 a bustling metropolis
ROODEPOORT – Councillor explains that ward has problems with illegal advertising and road infrastructure problems.
Ward 97 is a nestled on the northern side of Roodepoort and the following suburbs fall within the ward: Kloofendal, Helderkruin, Little Falls, Struben’s Valley, Poortview, Ruimsig, Willowbrook, Honeydew Grove, Honeydew Manor, Radiokop and Très Jolie.
Ward councillor Jaco Engelbrecht said, “The ward has large portions of residential and business developments. Residential and retail developments are prominent in Ward 97. We also have an informal settlement in Ruimsig, some distance from the Roodepoort Athletics Stadium.”
He added that all of the businesses face and share a common challenge –illegal advertising. “The problem exists across Johannesburg but we are also affected by illegal advertisements that pop up on our street lights across the ward.”
He explained that the ward is fortunate enough to have 18 educational institutions. “Some of the bigger institutions are Monash University, King’s School West Rand and Maragon Private Schools.”
“The ward also has various shopping centres like Clearwater Mall, Cascades Shopping Centre, Struben’s Valley Shopping Centre, Retail and Lifestyle Crossing Shopping Centre, Riverview Shopping Centre and Featherbrooke Village, where you can shop till you drop.”
Engelbrecht said, “Like any other ward we also have problems with our road surfaces and potholes are something that motorists have to deal with every day.”
He added and explained that the Johannesburg Roads Agency launched a project in the middle of this year where they upgraded most of the arterial roads in the area. “This made the ward a nicer place to drive in but we still have a couple of pothole issues on some of the smaller roads.”
Engelbrecht concluded,“Residents with issues and problems can call me anytime to log their complaints.”
