Maragon pupils and teachers ditched the classroom for their first soap box derby on 17 October.
Dressed in different costumes to reflect their themes, the rugby field was the perfect set up for a day of energetic racing in the sun.
Each class had teams of three working together to complete laps around the field in their carts, with two people pushing and one seated. With 30 minutes on the clock, team members were stationed at different pit stops and the ones driving the kart alternated at each stop, giving every person the opportunity to drive.
Ian McCallum, deputy principal of Maragon Primary School said, “The classes had 30 minutes each to complete as many laps as possible within the defined time. We also had prizes at the end of all the racing for best theme per grade, most enthusiastic teacher and most laps per grade. It was a lot of fun for everyone.”
Themes ranged from combat figures, the circus and caped superheroes. Racing and some prizes in the mix were definitely the best way to prepare everyone for the upcoming athletics season.
