As a passenger of Metrobus I see the frustration of passengers. Also as an ex-employee of the City of Johannesburg, I know about the internal politics that govern service delivery. If there isn’t political and budget constraints, Samwu is meddling with the driver schedules.

Their competing union Imatu always must “fix” the escalated political issues. As for buses breaking and being old, Esther Dreyer is only a municipal employee with the unfortunate job of being the messenger.Yes. There is a bus shortage only because the supply chain process is hampered with red tape. The questions should be addressed to Parks Tau and Trevor Fowler. They are part of the budget committee and recipients of hefty salaries. This issue is rife in Pikitup, Joburg Water, City Power, JRA etc. Employees complain about salary increases of 6,18 per cent a year. We don’t get these increases.

However, passengers, don’t abuse the bus drivers. They are employed to drive the bus, not as councillors or punching bags. Vocalise yourselves to the consumer protector and even create a forum to approach Parks Tau himself.

If you can’t do this, then stop complaining! Stop taking out your frustration on the drivers who do arrive for work and try their best.
