Maragon hosts its first soap-box derby

Working in trios, two pushing and one seated, the teams completed the laps.

Maragon Private Schools soap-box derby took place recently on the school’s rugby field.

The event began at 11am with a class-by-class procession accompanied by the music the various classes had selected.

Each class either had a specially designed T-shirt or a costume reflecting the theme they had chosen. Themes ranged from combat fatigues, the circus as well as caped heroes flaunting their skills.

Each class lined up at their various pit stops waiting for the siren, which was preceded by the words ”start the engines and go”. Working in trios – two pushing and one seated – the teams completed the laps. They changed at each pit stop, giving each member the opportunity to drive. Each class had 30 minutes to complete as many laps as possible.

Smiles abounded as teachers got in on the act, driving and pushing as they displayed their exceptional skills.

Prizes on offer were for best theme per grade, most enthusiastic teacher and most laps per grade.

The morning’s fun ended with some very tired racing drivers who without knowing actually had prepared themselves for the athletics season.
