Hearts won at garden concert

A concert set in a lovely garden with hearty lunches are sure to win over some hearts for local charity.

Supporting nine charities from her depot, Averil Botha of Multi Charity held a concert in her own garden this weekend.

On Sunday friends, family and newcomers joined Botha in her home’s garden for renditions of classic songs. The stage was set on one of the verandas of the enormous old house in a garden full of poppies, roses and large trees providing shade. The main attraction of the day was the White Chapel Ringers, a group of bell ringers of which some members are blind. Their performance included some Christmas carols. Afterwards Patrick O’Neill walked into the crowd, explaining the complexity of the bells rung.

“You can’t just swing it and hope it rings,” O’Neill said and had attendees test out the bells.

“The bells are swung in a certain way, picking up momentum to sound the way we play it,” O’Neill said and demonstrated.

Stalls with craft items such as jewellery and bird feeders also were on sale. Attendees could get more comfortable during the concert with a big slice of cake, some coffee or a hearty hamburger or boerie roll.

Botha runs Multi Charity, which organises events throughout the year to raise funds that later is distributed to the nine charities currently supported. These charities include Cansa West Rand, Hospice, Westview Clinic, Gateway Society, Floroma Frail Care, St Laurence’s Children’s Haven, Angel’s Place, Pathways Roodepoort and Cripple Care.

“Our goal is to make as much as we can so that these organisations have less fundraising to do and can focus on their passion – healing people and a community.”

Cansa West Rand ambassador Ester Pretorius and Pathways Roodepoort ambassador Palesa Mofokeng were impressed with the concert and thankful for the annual contribution from Multi Charity.
