At only seven years old, Megan Perrins was showing great talent. Now at 17 she has won numerous awards and has a body you’d believe is boneless.
The Grade 12 Maragon pupil specialises in acrobatic and modern dance, which she learnt at J and C Dance Creation in Weltevreden Park. Megan did not wake up a professional dancer but has worked her way up by practising at the studio five times a week.
She participated in a number of competitions recently. At the Roodepoort Dance Festival Championships Megan achieved three awards – best modern solo performance, highest per cent score in the category modern and tap, and modern all-rounder champion age 17 and above.
At the Acrobatics Federation of South Africa (Afsa) bursary competition, Megan placed fourth and received a special award for best personality.
At the Afsa Championships she achieved four awards – first place open in the duet for any age, first place in improvisation, best personality and overall senior champion.
At the American Dance Awards South African Championships, Megan competed in eight events. She was awarded six gold medals and two ultimate gold medals, and further received two special awards – one for personality and the other for a complete spectacle.
Besides school revue which she loves, Megan also enjoys other sport such as netball, athletics (track and field) and swimming. She has represented District 12 at the Gauteng Championships in athletics and netball every year since the age of 11.
Megan’s mother Judy indicated that with a great deal of difficulty, she and her husband ensure that Megan always gets sufficient sleep and uses any spare time to finish her homework. They encourage her not to wait until the last minute to do her assignments. “It is one thing having a talent, but hard work always beats talent. She always has been my champion and she gives her best in whatever she puts her mind to,“ says Megan’s father Gordon.
