Three cats have been brutally killed under suspicious circumstances on Van Zyl Road in Muldersdrift on 8 October.
Izak Boshoff from Interactive Security says he was alerted that one cat had been killed at 11pm and the following morning, two more incidents were reported.
“These were not poisonings at all, they were killed by blunt force trauma. They must have been hit with a hammer or something similar.”
Boshoff says what draws more suspicion to the incidents, is the fact that the cats were all placed together in the road, killed the same way and were facing in the same direction.
No one has come forward to claim ownership of the cats.
One resident, Heram Victor, said he was also alerted on a WhatsApp group by a neighbour about the cruel deaths. “Those deaths are very suspicious, it looks like some sort of cult killings. We don’t know who the cats belong to. We have WhatsApp groups where we always communicate with the other residents because we are constantly under attack here.”
This is not the first time animals have been killed in the area, last week, a handful of dogs and cats were brutally poisoned with what is known as two-step poison. The banned substance was put into the animal’s food [usually at night when the owners were sleeping] and has the capacity kill an animal in half an hour.
Dr Nicola Barnard, who treated a number of animals that have been poisoned recently, says animal poisonings are usually more prone during the festive season because that is when housebreaking and robberies are rife. She says, at the moment, she gets about two to three dogs that have been poisoned in a week.
“If an animal does not get to a vet immediately, it really can be too late because the poison acts very quickly, so you have half an hour to get help. The way these animals are poisoned is so brutal, because two-step poison burns the stomach lining and causes severe abdominal pains.”
