Show your support by losing your support

ROODEPOORT – CANSA Spokesperson Lucy Balona explained that early detection is key to reducing breast cancer.

October is Breast Awareness Month and 13 of October is No-Bra Day where ladies can show their support by losing their support (bras).

Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) spokesperson Lucy Balona explained that the only key to reducing breast cancer is early detection. “This month we are highlighting the importance of screening and early detection for breast cancer as part of our Women’s Health Campaign this October. Apart from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women of all races, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 35 in South Africa.”

Cansa CEO Eliza Joubert added,” We encourage all women to conduct regular self-examinations once a month. Know how your breasts look and feel and discuss any changes you observe with your health practitioner. It’s very important to go for a mammogram every year from the age of 40.”

Balona added that the Radiological Society of South Africa (RSSA) has partnered with the South African Radiological Society to offer a mammography at a reduced fee at all RSSA clinics throughout the country.

”Mammogram’s are just a screening tool but they can show changes in the breast of up to two years prior to a patient feeling them.”

She concluded and said, “Show your support on No-Bra Day by wearing no bra and ladies should go for a mammogram if they haven’t had time to go for one this year.”
