Speed bump to make area safer
RADIOKOP – Motorists changed driving behaviour after speed bump was constructed.
The area of Radiokop and especially Opera Road has some problems when it comes to motorists and speeding.
Radiokop Resident’s Association (RRA) chairperson Greg Olsen explained that there is a day-care centre for children on the road and parents were getting worried about the safety of their children. “We knew something had to be done to slow down the motorists as it was an accident or something more serious that was waiting to happen.” He added that after a couple of discussions, the association decided to involve the Johannesburg Roads Agency in order to construct a speed bump.
“When we started chatting to the entity, they had a problem with their budget but after a while we received some good news when the city decided to give them a bigger budget. They had still had issues with constructing a speed bump and we made and arrangement with them to pay for the speed bump on the condition that they construct a second speed bump further down the road at a later stage.”
Olsen said that the new speed bump was constructed at the start of July and immediately there was a change in the way the motorists were driving. RRA secretary Peter Dinsmore explained, “The speed bump was constructed opposite the day-care centre and now motorists actually slow down through the area. We want to thank each and every resident that contributed to the speed bump and to the local Pick n Pay, O’Hagens Pub and Engen for also donating money to construct the bump.” Olsen concluded and thanked the community for supporting the initiative.
