Are you willing to walk, cycle or use a public transport?
METRO - The City of Joburg encourages walking, cycling and using public transport during the month of October.

The City of Joburg is taking things a notch up this month to host the annual Transport Month from 1 to 31 October.
This year’s theme is Towards Eco-mobility which aims to encourage walking, cycling and using publictransport to navigate the city.
According to City of Joburg’s Transport Safety and Promotion Sipho Nhlapo, this is a great initiative. ” We want to encourage residents to use economical methods of travelling,” he said.
“This country has beautiful weather and Joburg has a lot of choices when it comes to public transport – we would be happier if residents used them.”
He adds, “Just for this month, go and experience more of this public transport.”
The City will also improve public transport safety in partnership with the taxi industry.
Nhlapo explained that there are a lot of events associated with the theme of eco-mobility. On 1 October, The City will be at the University of Johannesburg, educating students about gas for mobility.
“The City will be buying some of the buses that use gas– ‘green buses’ and we want to encourage residents to start using them,”informed Nhlapo.
And on 23 October, the City will launch the first completed, dedicated cycling and walking pathways in Orlando in partnership with National Government. They will also be partnering with Absa City Festival with the provision of dedicated Rea Vaya services to carry rugby fans from park-and-ride points to Ellis Park Stadium for the Springboks vs All Blacks rugby match on 4 October.
Nhlapo also shared that the City will host a Women in Transport and Construction Seminar on 21 October. “We are targeting women in transport, and the talk will be about encouraging women in emerging companies, by identifying opportunities available to them, as there are a lot of tenders that women can apply for.”
Maboneng will host The Eco-mobility weekend on 24 until 26 October and certain streets will be closed and visitors are encouraged to use public transport to get to the venue.
