The suburb on the border of Roodepoort and Fairland is facing an uphill battle with streetlights that aren’t working and missing manhole covers.
Panorama Resident’s Association Chairperson Jon Rosenberg mentioned that the problematic streetlights are located in J G Strydom Road and Wildesering Avenue.
“These roads have been without streetlights since May this year and two residents in the area and I have been in contact with City Power about these dysfunctional streetlights. We received numerous reference numbers but nothing ever happens.”
He further explained that another, more dangerous problem arose when residents in Weltevreden Park noticed that most of their manhole covers are missing. “These exposed manholes pose a dangerous threat as anyone can walk into one at night or during the day.”
He added that school children in the area make use of Mosterdboom Street to get to school and back. “There is not a single manhole that has a cover in this street.” Rosenberg further explained that the issues have been logged to both City Power and the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) months ago, but nothing has been done about the issues.
“The problem is accountability as no one wants to take responsibility for issues in our suburb.”
No comment was forthcoming from City Power by the time of going to print. JRA Spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said that the entity received the complaints and a team will be sent out to assess the situation.
