Community rolls up its sleeves

Forum takes measures to prevent crime.

The residents of Discovery and Florida who reside in the area surrounding the Roodepoort Theatre joined forces to clean-up Barbara Park.

The initiative was the brainchild of the Discovery Community Forum who identified the overgrown park as a hideaway for criminals. On 20 September approximately 50 residents, some as young as seven and as old as 80, got together with chainsaws, rakes, buckets and spades to clean up the park. Councillor Carl Mann organised with Pikitup to have skips delivered for the refuse and ER24 was on the scene in case of an emergency.

According to Hennie Matthews, the block watch captain for the area, crime has gone down noticeably due to the community’s pro-active involvement.
