The Palace of Westrand celebrates Yam Festival

The Yam Festival is a popular holiday in Ghana and Nigeria.

The Palace of Westrand celebrated their annual Yam Festival at the Golden Reef Athletics Club recently. The day was filled with bliss, Nigerian cuisine and beverages.

The event was attended by 300 distinguished guests, some from as far as Cape Town.

The Yam Festival is a popular holiday in Ghana and Nigeria, usually held at the beginning of August at the end of the rainy season. Yams are the most common food in many African countries. It is also known as Ikeji in Nigeria.

The Palace of Westrand is the judicial arm of the Westrand Brothers Association. It was was formed in the year 2013 with the mother body (Western Brother) established in 2008 and is an executive arm. In 2009 it gave birth to West Rand football club, which is a legislative arm.

The three arms of administration work hand in hand in the daily and smooth running of the organisation.

With a large number of Roodepoort residents being people from Eastern Nigeria, the Palace of Westrand was established to exhibit the Igbo culture. They have 18 members who also are stake holders.

Some of the aims of the Palace is to maintain the Igbo culture, settle issues that affect the people of Roodepoort and the West Rand and protect the Nigerian community at large.
