Dorcas Aid teaches permaculture
Residents of Soweto were taught sustainability at a recent Dorcas Aid workshop.
Dorcas Aid spent yesterday and today (29 August) teaching permaculture to less fortunate individuals.
Residents from Kliptown, Soweto yesterday began learning of permaculture at the Dorcas Aid workshop. Permaculture has a set of sustainability principles that take people from being dependent consumers to becoming responsible producers.
These principles are taught through a design process and ethics list and can be translated to aspects of human habitation, agriculture, ecological building, technology, education and economics.
Dorcas Aid, being long-standing supporters of these principles, last year started a permaculture garden on their own premises from which they began presenting workshops on permaculture to informal settlers. They also helped create many permaculture gardens in informal settlements locally.
Naledi Mayile, Bongeka Senfeni and Xoliswa Liwalala were but three of the 11 attendees from Kliptown interested in living a more sustainable life. They were assisted by and grouped with students from Wits who took on permaculture as a community project.
Dorcas Aid is an international charity organisation with a local office in Florida. For more information contact Nerine Niemand on 011 672 9669 or via email at fundraising@dorcas.co.za.
