Story telling through song

WELTEVREDEN PARK- Tonya shares with us the story of her music career and what to expect at her upcoming show.

WELTEVREDEN PARK – She’s hailed by many as one of the hottest properties on the cabaret circuit, while others call her a pint-sized dynamo.

Having spent more than 23 years in the entertainment industry, she is sure to hold some of the best titles.

Weltevreden Park resident, Tonya Koenderman will be on stage at the Foxwood Theatre in Houghton, rendering her solo tribute show, Liza with a T.

With this show, Koenderman says she will be telling a story of the life of American singer, actress and dancer Liza Minnelli.

“This is a musical review of Liza’s life.”

She promises to bring out every aspect of Liza’s life on stage while performing.

“I’ve studied her life very carefully.”

She admits that though this will not be the first time she performs the show in Johannesburg, she always receives a warm welcome from the audience.

“This will be my fourth run of Liza with a T, but every time I perform it people never seem to get enough of it.”

She highlights that her impersonation has been so impressive that it once earned her a spot to feature in the look-alike, sound-alike show Stars in Your Eyes in 1996.

“Being in that show helped me to be the only local artist to star in the international show, Beyond Belief.”

What’s keeping her relevant after 23 years in the industry? “I stay true to myself and continue to do what I love with passion.”

She also points out that what makes her love what she does even more is the fact that it gives her room to explore her creativity.

“I also enjoy the travelling. I’ve been to countries that I never thought I would ever go to and that helped me learn about other cultures.”

If she is not on stage performing, Koenderman uses the time to catch up with her cats.

The multi-talented Koenderman will be at the Foxwood Theatre on 5,6, 7, 12, 13 14, 19 and 20 September. Shows will start at 8pm except for the Sunday show, which will start at 12pm.
