Strengthened relations between Pikitup and recycling companies

JOBURG – Recycling companies received a thumbs up for helping reduce waste going to landfills, during Pikitup's Waste Recycling dialogue.

The City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity Pikitup hosted its annual waste recycling dialogue.

This year’s dialogue served as a platform for the City to address various matters relating to its Jozi@Work programme.

Speakers on the day included the City’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) of Environment, Infrastructure and Services Department councillor Matshidiso Mfikoe and Pikitup chairperson Dr Nomonde Mabuya, among others.

Mfikoe also recognised recycling companies for the role they have played in reducing waste going to landfills, and how they can further work with the City in meeting its objective of reducing waste to landfill sites by 20 per cent in 2016.

“We want to strengthen the relationships which the City of Johannesburg and Pikitup have with recycling companies that are contributing to the success of waste minimisation,” said Mfikoe.

The keynote speech delivered by Mfikoe addressed issues around waste minimisation and rallied stakeholders around the City’s waste management strategy, in terms of their respective roles.

The delegates in attendance got a first-hand opportunity to hear about Pikitup’s role in the Jozi@Work programme, which was introduced by the executive Mayor Mpho Tau during his State of the City address earlier in the year.

Delegates also heard about the impact the project will have in achieving the City’s waste reduction targets and objectives. Emphasis was placed on the role that recycling companies will play in the new service model.
