South Africa has another two medals thanks to Fanie van der Merwe and Charl du Toit who ran in the T37 100m race.
Van der Merwe and du Toit took gold and silver respectively. Andrea Dalle Ave came fourth with a seasons best of 12.39. Van der Merwe can add this gold to the three medals he took at the Beijing and London Paralympics.
Another para-athlete Juanelie Meijer ended sixth in the combined T37/38 long jump.
Two South African sprinters progressed through to the semifinals of the men’s 100m event.
National champion Simon Magakwe and Akani Simbine both qualified into the semis automatically, while late addition, Ncincilili Titi, didn’t make it.
Unfortunately neither Magakwe nor Simbine progressed further. Magakwe came seventh in his semifinal, while Simbine came fourth in his. Only the first two and the fastest third place times could qualify for the final.
Jamaica dominated the 100m finals as per usual with Bailey-Cole and Ashmeade taking first and third respectively, while England’s Gemili took second.
Shot-putter Orazio Cremona automatically progressed to the finals.
Cremona sailed through with some of his best statistics, qualifying with 20.03. He increased his distance in the final, his furthest at 20. 13. He came fourth overall.
In the Men’s Decathlon, Fredriech Pretorius and Willem Coertzen were 13 and 16 respectively overnight, with five events to go. Coertzen has since withdrawn from the competition due to an achilles injury.
