Do’s and don’ts in a robbery situation
JOBURG - Pay attention to what's going on around you and it might save your life.
Robberies happen on a daily basis but what do you do when you are involved in one and how do you avoid one? Security in Practice CEO Louis Grobler gave some tips to keep in mind while you are involved in a robbery.
He said, “The first tip to remember is to never carry large amounts of cash or valuable items. Do not hesitate to call the police to come and investigate any strange noises or people in your neighbourhood. Switch on the outdoor lights at night and be weary of allowing strangers into your house.”
Below is a few tips to follow if you are involved in a robbery situation:
– If you feel the need to use a toilet, or if you need to take any medication, try to delay it and communicate with the robbers only when they seem to be calm and approachable.
– Never make eye contact with the robber(s); this may endanger your life.
– Don’t make sudden movements that might aggravate the robbers.
– Always do as you are told.
– Try and memorize the facial features of the robber(s) in order to provide the police with a detailed description.
– If you spot their vehicle try and obtain the details and registration number of the vehicle.
– Try and remember the direction of travel taken by the robbers when leaving and allow the robbers ample time to leave.
Grobler concluded and said, “The biggest piece of advice to remember in order to safeguard you and your family is to be aware. Notice what’s going on around you and if something does not look right or out of place it usually is.”
