Newly built gateway village home handed over

RUIMSIG - Gateway village now has new facilities to accommodate its elderly residents.

The Gateway Village’s newly-built extension home for the elderly in Ruimsig was handed over on 1 July.

According to the village’s manager Rina Schoch, the newly built home can accommodate 24 people.

“The building is still empty and needs to be fully furnished before it can be occupied,” said Schoch.

Gateway Society fundraising manager Chanelle Bekker said the R3.2-million project was supported by big sponsors like Renico Construction (Pty) Ltd; Instant Readymix (concrete supplier) and building material supplier Buco – to mention a few.

She adds that there are still a few things that need to be completed before the home will be ready for occupation.

“The new home will open 24 residential units at once. We previously had seven homes with six rooms sharing. The other building is a high-care centre for people with limited mobility,” Bekker informs.

There will be another fundraising event on 16 July – a ladies breakfast – and proceeds will go toward the village.

Tickets are R100 per person and R650 for a table for eight people and include a continental breakfast, a goodie bag and stunning prizes.

Alida Grundlingh, human resource manager for Renico group of companies, says the company partnered with other builders and had its own suppliers that sponsored goods on this project.

“Some were involved on the architectural side, plumbing and carpentry. Every year the company selects a social investment programme and, this year, we selected the Gateway Society… and we are excited to have been involved with it,” said Grundlingh.

Gateway Society founding committee members Jan Kloek, Lena Dreyer, Jan and Alette Labuschagne also graced the event.

“I am very happy to see the progress that has been made by the entire Gateway Society and that it continues to bring change into the lives of the elderly and mentally challenged people,”said Kloek
