Security tips from security expert Louis Grobler
ROODEPOORT - Security expert urges residents to open their eyes and notice what is going on around them to minimise falling victim to crime.
According to Security in Practice’s CEO Louis Grobler, safety is all about awareness.
He said, “If you lose your focus for a split second, that is when a crime is most likely to happen to you.”
Grobler said a lot of crimes take place in the Florida, Northcliff, Quellerina and Bergbron (FNQB) area because residents don’t pay attention to what’s going on around them.
“Two incidents took place in the FNQB area because people weren’t paying attention to their surrounds. The first one took place in Wilgeheuwel when a couple of robbers tried to gain entry into a house by breaking a window but they were interrupted and fled the scene. The second incident took place at a house in Soutpansberg in Quellerina when three armed robbers held up eight people.”
Grobler said an easy tip to remember that will make you more aware of what’s happening around you is to leave your cellphone and pay attention to your surroundings when driving home.
“If a suspicious vehicle is following you home, then you should drive to your nearest police station and call your security company.”
The second tip that Grobler mentioned is to lock up behind yourself.
“As you enter your house just turn around and lock the gate and doors behind you. Criminals will slip in if you leave your gate open to quickly pop into your house to get something – all they need is a split second.”
“Your perimeter walls that surround your house should be prepared to ward off criminals. A high wall is not enough to keep criminals out of your property, add extra razor wires onto your wall to make it harder for these criminals to gain entry into your yard.”
He concluded, “The last thing is something that most people don’t ever think of and that’s to know your neighbours. Introduce yourself to your neighbours and exchange numbers so that you can call each other in emergency situations.”
