Honeydew police’s campaign to lower theft out of motor vehicles

NORTHSIDER AREA - Police go out to gyms to raise awareness about car jamming.

Though the number of theft out of motor vehicle incidents recorded in a day cannot be confirmed, spokesperson for Honeydew Police Station Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs, said they were seeing an increase in such cases being reported and at most times, she highlighted that it was due to negligence of motorists. “People still leave valuables on theirs seats,” explained Jacobs.

On 11 June Honeydew police went out to all the gyms around the precinct with the aim of raising awareness. According to Jacobs, gyms are currently targeted by car jammers. “Gyms are being targeted in the morning between 4.30am and 7am and in the late afternoon between 5pm and 8pm.”

With their awareness campaign, police hope that residents will be more vigilant and exercise caution every time they park their cars.

Jacobs urged residents to never leave laptops, cellphones, handbags or any other valuables in their cars. “Not even in the boot of the car… residents must always take their belongings with them and never leave them in the car.” The same applies to GPS devices on display. Another important measure she said residents must get used to doing is, to always double-check that their vehicle is properly locked before moving away from it. “When using a remote locking device, stand next to your vehicle and make sure that the vehicle has indeed locked.”
