Deceased hero honored and remembered

HONEYDEW -A car accident claimed the life of a dedicated police officer of Honeydew Police Station.

A car accident claimed the life of a dedicated police officer of Honeydew Police Station. On Sunday, 25 May at about 5am, Warrant Officer Mathe Mamogwa was involved in what is explained by eyewitnesses as a horrific crash. “He was on his way to work when another vehicle collided with his vehicle head on, just 3km away from his house at Kocksrood in Randfontein,” explained spokesperson for the police station Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs.

During his memorial service that was held at Cosmo City Community Church in Cosmo City on Thursday 29 May, speaker after speaker remembered Mamogwa as a hard working and dedicated officer. Station Commander for Honeydew Police Station, Brigadier Wayne Sirkhot thanked his family for sharing him with the police service. “I know it must not have been easy. There are moments lost and some stolen hours because at times he had to work these difficult and awkward shifts.”

Paying his tribute, Cluster Commander for Honeydew General Oswald Reddy said, the deceased was an officer who served the Honeydew community with dedication and loyalty. “I never reprimanded Mamogwa for anything. Anytime I checked his work, everything was always in order.”

Reddy also mentioned that he was an officer who was content and satisfied with what he had. “Unlike other juniors, Mamogwa never asked me for a promotion when he met me, though we know he deserved much more than that.”

He joined the police force in 1995 and was transferred to Honeydew Police station in 2007. At the time of his death, he had 19 years and 136 days of service with the South African Police Services (SAPS).

“Warrant Officer Mamogwa was a born leader and also received an award last year at the station’s awards for the best arrest made during 2013, ” added Jacobs.

During his service, Mamogwa received three other medals – one for 10 year faithful service, the second for 10 year amalgamation commemoration and the third for serving during the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
