Kings School takes the Aitken Cup
POORTVIEW – Kings School West Rand's first team hockey players defy the odds to bring the Aitken Cup home.
Kings School West Rand took first prize at the Aitken Cup, a hockey competition that takes place in Johannesburg among various high schools.
School principal Ken Langley said, “Our first team hockey boys played in the very prestigious Aitken Cup Hockey Tournament over the weekend of 17 to 19 May. Our school only entered the tournament last year and finished seventh at the end of 2013. This year we knew it would be tough, as we were in the same pool as HerronBridge College, Curro Serengeti Academy and Dainfern College. Friday was a long day when we lost against Dainfern and won our other two matches.”
He mentioned that the next rivals the team had to face were Queens College and Hoërskool Kempton Park, which they played against on 18 May. “Sunday was a cold and miserable day, but we were focused and determined to win. We knew that psychologically, we were already on the back foot, because we had lost to Dainfern College who were playing against us in the finals. But, by the time the end-hooter blew, we had beaten Dainfern a massive 7 –2, and we are now officially the winners of the Aitken Cup Section C.”
I am extremely proud to be the coach for such a driven, passionate and dedicated team,” said coach André Berrange. “All of our matrics will be leaving us at the end of this year and they will be dearly missed in this team, but I am excited for the road ahead which includes Aitken Cup Section B 2015.”
Langley concluded, “We are blessed to not only have such talent represented in these boys, but their leadership and level of sportsmanship is an example to their younger peers. Well done, boys.”
