Gateway Village hosts fête for the elderly
RUIMSIG – The Gateway Society hopes to raise R3.2 million at their Winter Market that will go towards building new residential facilities for the elderly.
The Gateway Society will host a winter market on 31 May at the Gateway Village in Ruimsig.
The aim, according to fundraising manager Chanelle Bekker, is to raise funds for the building of a new home for the elderly residents.
“The project costs R3.2 million and the home will open 24 residential units at once. Currently, we have seven homes with six rooms sharing. The other one is a high-care centre for people with limited mobility,” said Bekker.
She added that the Gateway market has been running for the past 41 years and is the most popular fundraising event that they host annually.
“We have other events to assist with fundraising and the communities get quite involved in terms of sponsoring various items toward the events.”
This year, visitors can look forward to Boeresport for children from 10am to 11am, tractor rides and a carousel.
“There will be other games to entertain the children, tea garden, crafts and loads of food and sweets. The tug o’ war team will be hosting a competition on the day. There will also be a Vintage car display from West Rand Vintage Car Club. Clowns will be handing out balloons to children. There will be belly dancing and South African recording artist Christine Mansour is set to perform and display her DJ skills. A Dare2Care pageant will be on from 1pm to 2.30pm and will serve as an ambassador search for The Gateway Society. The search will focus on inner values, integrity and moral standing –not outer beauty. Great prizes will be up for grabs between 9am and 3pm.
