Who wants a free puppy?
FLORIDA LAKE – Lake Lucy Brown, the abandoned and then rescued darling dog of Florida Lake has found her happily ever after. But now four of her puppies still need a loving home.
Lake Lucy Brown, by now a regular furry face in sister paper Roodepoort Record, has settled down for her happily ever after at Vos Attorneys.
This abandoned and pregnant dog was found roaming around Florida Lake by Sarette Vos in January, who gave her a second lease on life.
Her new name is a hybrid of the classic song by the Mills Brothers, Sweet Lucy Brown and a hint to where she was found: a lake.
She has since given birth to eight healthy Weimaraner- and Labrador-cross puppies.
Lake was even reunited with her mother when a Florida resident who had been following the dog’s heartwarming story in the newspaper realised that the little roamer was from a litter of puppies his female dog had a few years ago.
“The only thing that remains a mystery is who the daddy of these puppies is,” Sarette Vos says impishly.
There are still four puppies in need of good homes in Vos’ care, all named after dialects for the word ”water.” They’re almost four months old now.
“Aqua is calm and zen, he’s the sort of dog you want for a lone companion,” Vos explains. “And Nero is a team-player, but he is unfortunately a bit of an underdog. The others do bully him a little. Rano, well, he’s Mr. Adventure. And Zan? Zan is very clever.”
“They were raised with a lot of love, so I want them to have good homes,” Vos adds, serious now.
“I have a few requirements for prospective puppy-owners though. I expect them to sign a contract, in fact. The dogs should have a dry, warm, enclosed place to sleep. There should be proper fencing where they’re being kept. And I want to be kept abreast of their veterinary record and inoculations.”
And how’s Lake Lucy Brown faring now?
“Her personality has changed completely,” Vos enthuses. “She was so fearful when I started feeding her at Florida Lake all those months ago. She was terrified of people. I had to put sleeping pills in her food to subdue her then. But now, she’s the happiest dog in the world. She’s got friends. Her tail is always wagging.”
