Capoeira expands to Goldman Street

New classes are aimed at getting children involved in the art.

The first of a new series of Capoeira classes were held at Bodyline Gym in Florida on 3 May.

These classes started by Kevin and Farah Jackson is an expansion of their current Cidade do Ouro Capoeira operation in Discovery. Capoeira is an African martial art form that originated among African slaves in Southern America. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is disguised as a dance, distracting the opposition from the Capoeirista’s (dancer’s, fighter’s) true power.

“With this class, I hope to expand the presence and knowledge of Capoeira on the West Rand.”

Kevin Jackson is looking forward to implementing his fresh focus on youth development in this new venture. “The onus is on us to carry the art of Capoeira over to the next generations,” he told the class on Saturday morning. After a brief discussion of the goals of the class and the importance of retaining and expanding knowledge of the art, the regular Capoeiristas of Cidade do Ouro showed how it is done. They gathered in a roda (circle) and took turns battling each other in the centre of it, while Jackson and other Capoeiristas made Portuguese music on unique instruments.

“It is also a great way to learn to speak, or at least sing in Portuguese,” Jackson joked afterwards.

The Cidade do Ouro Capoeira classes at the Bodyline Gym in Goldman Street will be held every Saturday at 10am. For more information contact Farah Jackson on 084 697 6053.
