I recently have returned to Roodepoort after a visit to the USA. I am absolutely shocked at the general state of our town and Wilro Park in particular. I am embarrassed to be a resident! I do not know when last the verges were cut, potholes filled or litter removed. There are streets where the grass is growing through the tar and is so long that it poses a danger to motorists and pedestrians. Wilgerood, CR Swart and Foxglove Streets are just a few such examples. The places where the grass has been cut, only half a job gets done! No one has bothered to pick up the cuttings or the litter that has been exposed. The edges are not trimmed and the grass is growing into the streets. The vagrants and criminals hiding in the bushes and long grass in these unkempt areas pose a whole different set of problems.
I personally cannot live like this and so, at my own expense, have been proactive in keeping my immediate surroundings neat and tidy for the past ten years. I suggest you take a drive down Hibiscus Street to see what a suburban road should look like. There is only so much one person can do.
Why should I pay rates? Why should I even bother to stand in a queue to vote next week?

I strongly agree with Brenda’s letter (not about the no voting). The state of our streets and parks are totally unacceptable. The island strip in Wilgerood has not been attended to for over a year and so are many other areas. How do we get this addressed and resolved?
