Two arrested; one wounded in shootout with police

Suspects to face three separate charges for their crimes.

A suspect was wounded and another arrested following a shootout in Adler Avenue in Florida Glen on Tuesday night just after 7.30pm.

According to Florida South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Lydia Dikolomela this follows after police responded to information of a vehicle being hijacked in Mondeor.

“We received information that the vehicle was hijacked in Mondeor. The Gauteng Flying Squad gave chase and once the vehicle was spotted in Florida Glen we joined forces.

“As police attempted to pull over the vehicle failed, a number of suspects on foot opened fire.

“Police then returned fire and wounded one of the suspects in the lower body before he could flee in another vehicle. This vehicle was also registered to be stolen during a house robbery in January this year. He was taken to nearby hospital for treatment where he is in police custody and to be arrested.

“The driver of the first hijacked vehicle was eventually apprehended and taken to the Florida police station.

“The suspects who escaped during the shootout are still at large. It is unknown to police to how many were involved.”

Police also confiscated two firearms (9mm pistols) – one on the scene next to the wounded suspect and another in the suspect’s possession who was pulled over in the hijacked vehicle.

Dikolomela confirmed that the suspects caught will face three charges that of being in possession of hijacked motor vehicles; attempted murder and being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
