Charterhouse pupils collect Easter eggs for under-privileged

RADIOKOP - Collective school effort to benefit 80 charities.

Radiokop-based Charterhouse Pre-primary and Primary schools collectively collected 12 487 Easter eggs to support one of the activities of the Johannesburg Mini Council.

The council comprises of 80 mini councillors who are Grade 7 pupils and nominated from 40 primary schools in the greater Johannesburg metropolitan area.

Charterhouse is represented on the council by Boikanyo Kgoroge and Brendan Davis.

Councillors will hand out the collected easter eggs to 80 charities for their annual easter egg drive.

The council has six committees; welfare, smile, special projects, leadership, civic awareness and recreation.

Councillors are responsible for electing their own leadership after working together for about three months. There is assistance and mentoring by the governing body that is comprised of parents of past and present mini councillors and is governed by the constitution.

The mini council aims to:

  • Develop leadership potential of the city’s primary school youths
  •  Equip the youth for better leadership in line with the country’s constitution
  • Promote contact and co-operation between primary school leaders in all communities
  • Develop an interest in civic and community affairs
  • Develop an awareness of those in need, and of problems within the community by organising relevant projects to alleviate their burdens.
  • Develop self-confidence and a positive self-image of the councillors and among the youth generally.

Implementing the above objectives is an ongoing process and it is through activities that include the following:

  • Involving the youth generally (including those outside of the mini council) in providing community services to the under-privileged, senior citizens and the indigent
  • Motivational leadership talks by prominent personalities.

Functions are organised by involving the mini councillors and other youth where food parcels, blankets and many other essentials are provided directly to the under-privileged and senior citizens. The benefits of these endeavours reach thousands of people annually.
