Bins overflow in park
WELTEVREDEN PARK - Messy park deters visitors from using park
A park is supposed to be a safe escape for residents who want to relax during the week or weekends.
Residents in Weltevreden Park are unable to use Excel Park because of the bins which overflow with rubbish and the uncut grass.
According to Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin the park has been in the dilapidated state since the start of the year. “Residents have tried to clean the park but they can only do so much. Vagrants also sleep in the park and they attribute to the littering problems in the park, ” explains Tonkin.
Residents in ward 86 are also faced with an uphill battle of cleaning Alberts Farm Park in Albertsville. Nina Venjakob planned to employ the local vagrant who lives inside the park. “We gave the man money and in return we asked him to clean up the park and look after it while he was staying there.” However Venjakob was shocked to discover that the trusty vagrant disappeared a week after she made arrangements with him.
Ward 89 councillor Ingrid Reinten explained that the two parks in her area that fall under the Roodepoort Northsider’s distribution area are maintained by the Residents Associations in the various areas. “The park in Kraalbessie Avenue across Panorama Primary School is well maintained and the surrounding community takes pride in cleaning it up once a month.”
No comment from City Parks was forthcoming at time of going to print with regards to the maintenance issues with the various parks in Joburg.
