Paddler 48th and second at national event
Fine showing from local at World's biggest inland and highest altitude surfski race.
Roodepoort’s Gunther Grune finished among the top 50 competitors in a single ski and second in the Sub Master age category at a national surfski race at Emmerantia Dam.
With 100 surfskis on the dam, creating their own turbulence, Gunther who is a member of the Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) was one of the locals who enjoyed participating. He crossed the finish line in one hour and 20 minutes, which secured him a 48th place as single ski and second Sub Master age category finisher.
According to FLCC spokesperson, Jennie Dallas, “The Emmarentia Dam’s local canoe club, Dabulamanzi, has applied for Guinness Book of Records recognition for hosting the largest inland surfski race with the highest altitude.
“The 12km race around the 1km perimeter dam was made exciting by motorboats circling to create waves simulating a surfski sea race.
“With massive prize monies and sponsorships, the race attracted the world and South African marathon champion Hank McGregor who won the event, as well as Oscar Chalupsky – winner of every major surfski race in the world except the high altitude one in Johannesburg.
“Olympic bronze medal winner Bridgette Hartley partnered with multiple Dusi winner, Andy Birkett chased for second place in the doubles category.”
