Florida police station cleaned up

Residents of and volunteers from Discovery cleaned up the Florida Police Station gardens and braai area on Saturday 29 March.

The Discovery Community Forum took on a new challenge to clean up their community by focusing on a clean-up operation at the Florida Police Station on Saturday 29 March.

Their activities spilled over to Sunday 30 March as well as volunteer Rechardt Oberholtzer said, “there was simply too much to do”.

After a meeting at the police station earlier in March Rechardt Oberholtzer was amongst one of the many members that volunteered his time to clean up the Station. A couple of forum members had noticed the terrible state of the garden and its surrounds at the back of the building. Grass was unkept, trees have not been pruned and the general area was messy, said Oberholtszer’s fianceé, Mandy MacDonald. It took the couple and the other willing members but a week to organise a clean-up operation.

Oberholtzer’s company, iKhulu Installations, sponsored the labour and gardening equipment.

“Thank you to Hire All for lending us bush cutters, Motorsport Liquors for sponsoring colddrinks, Vetkoek Paleis for sponsoring food, AA Skip for providing us with a bin for the garden waste and Lido Supermarket for providing us with plastic bags for the waste.”

MacDonald, Oberholtzer and other volunteer John Gafney were proud to say that the food and drinks that were sponsored were not only for the volunteers but also for the 20-odd policemen on duty on Saturday.

“I’d like to challenge residents to organise a day like today to better their community or clean up their community — and I don’t mind to get updates on how they’re doing.”
