Speed freaks arrested on N1 South

Speedsters busted on N1 South.

Afrikaans troubadour Steve Hofmeyer and Chief Commander of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema both have been in the news recently for being prosecuted after found guilty of excessive speeding.

On 30 March at approximately 9.40am a 32-year-old resident of Featherbrook Estate was caught doing a 190km/h on the N1 South in the Maraisburg area.

The man in his Audi RS5 was chased by the JMPD High Speed Unit for approximately two kilometres and stopped at the N17 off-ramp where other officers blocked off the road and arrested him. He was detained at the Florida Police Station and released on R1 500 bail.

The man will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of reckless and negligent driving along with eight other motorists who also were arrested on the day for speeding in excess of a 160km/h.

The spokesperson for JMPD, Wayne Minnaar told the Record that there has been an alarming increase of speed violations that exceeds 160km/h on the N1 South.

He ascribed the dangerous trend towards the fact that the freeway is especially wide and that it has a downhill slant in the area.
Minnaar said he could not say what the punishment for these transgressors would be since it is up to the Magistrates’ Court to mete out the punishment.
