Passionate cyclist donates R15 000 to SPCA
The Roodepoort SPCA benefits from a passionate cyclist who took part in the Cape Argus Cycle Tour.
Dries Oelofse (61) took part in his 16th consecutive Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour with one goal in mind – to raise as much as he can for the Roodepoort SPCA.
On Wednesday 19 March a very excited Dries and his group of supporters donated R15 000 to the SPCA in Maraisburg.
His decision to work towards this cause was in loving memory of a close friend, Janice Smit who passed away in 2013. They met while practicing diving at the same diving school, and he couldn’t resist raising money and awareness for one of her greatest passions this year.
“Janice was dear to me, she was a great diver and she had an enormous love and passion for animals.”
His friends from the Aqua Zoo diving club quickly came on board with his decision and created a facebook page (‘Dries and Jan SPCA Argus Cycle’) through which they promoted his cause. He was sponsored per kilometre for the 108 kilometres in the tour.
“The Cape Argus is the greatest timed cycling event in the world, and this has been my 16th consecutive time finishing the tour.
“I hope to make this cause my focus in every year that I compete in it.”
