Thumbs up for West Rand cycle race
ROODEPOORT - Thousands take part in the Berge en Dale Classic cycle race
On Saturday 8 February the country’s cycling community gathered in the West Rand for the 2014 Berge en Dale Classic cycle race.
This year’s race was different for two reasons: The challenge saw a dramatic increase in the number of participants, and the race’s start and finish point was moved from Silverstar Casino to Cradlestone Mall.
Mogale City traffic officers ensured that cyclists were safe, controlling traffic and maintaining order. The day’s weather was ideal; with moderate temperatures and no rain.
The Berge en Dale Classic is the largest and most challenging cycle race in the West Rand, with cyclists registering for either the 55km or 99km.
This year’s race kicked off at 6am and the first group of cyclists crossed the finish line just a few minutes after 9am. In first place was Costa Seibeb, followed by Tesform Issak, and thereafter Bonaventure Uwizenyimana. An-Li Kachelhoffer was the first woman to cross the finish line, with Mandy Human and Carla Oberlhozer coming in at second and third place respectively.
