Khumalo gives vehicle safety tips

Roodepoort police spokesperson Nonhlanhla Khumalo cautions residents about the safety of their vehicles.

Warrant Officer Nonhlanhla Khumalo, spokesperson for the Roodepoort police, kindly gave the Record a few crime-prevention tips to share with the community during an interview on Monday 10 March.

“The police advise the community at large to use these tips to prevent crime.

“They can make a huge difference in fighting crime in our policing precinct,” Khumalo emphasised.

Her tips were aimed specifically at keeping vehicles safe – residents’ vital modes of transport.

“Make sure that all your doors are locked and windows wound shut when you park your vehicle at work or in a shopping centre parking lot in the morning,” she started.

“Your vehicle should not be easy to access, by which merit it will become a target.

“If you do leave items of value in the vehicle (your laptop, camera, cellphone or handbag) please be reminded to put it in the boot of your car – it is not visible from there.”

Khumalo warns residents not to park their vehicles where no security officers or car guards are visible.

“Never leave your firearm in the car as this is against the law.”

Khumalo also cautions women to keep their handbags in the boot of the car while driving, as in so doing they can prevent smash-and-grab and hijacking incidents.

Khumalo collected these tips, she explained, to raise awareness amongst residents when it comes to their vital modes of transport.
