Poorte scrapes a win against fierce Crusaders

Narrow 19-17 win not good enough to scare top contenders.

Poorte (first team) had to dig deep to overcome a rather determined Bloem Crusaders side 19-17 on Saturday 8 March in what was the first Community Cup fixture for both teams.

Although the match was played in Poorte’s backyard, and with them being the favourites, the underdogs Crusaders surprisingly arrived with no other intention but to win.

It’s easily understandable as they seeked redemption to avenge that big 35-14 thumping at home against the same opposition last year.

Although the two-point win is not good enough to send out a warning that they are strong title contenders, Poorte coach Brian Armitage says a win is a win.

“It was the first game of the competition and there is plenty that we should work on. It was a scrappy performance by the boys but because its the first game in this tough competition, it’s understandable that we didn’t fire on all cylinders.

“It was a tight game and we expected that. The main goal was to win the game and start off with a win.

“I’m happy with our set pieces but we let through a sloppy try. A big concern was the breakdown. Both us and the other team had a tough time to retain the ball and play our natural game as the ref didn’t allow it.

“Take nothing away from the opposition, the Crusaders are a far better side than last year and I’m sure they will surprise a few teams.”

Poorte will now go on a two-week tour in the Free State where they will play both Welkom and Welkom Rovers away from home on the weekends of 15 and 22 March.

Poorte point scorers against Crusaders:

• Tries: Jessey Geyer (1), Chanley Williams (1).

• Penalties: Hennie Oosthuizen (3).
