Horses for healing

RUIMSIG - Sarda in need of sponsorship to survive.

The Gauteng branch of the South African Riding for the Disabled Association (Sarda), which is based in Ruimsig, has been around since 1984.

Branch secretary Julia Morris explained that the association provides therapeutic riding for children with special needs. “We also have interactive equine therapy for the elderly. Our horses are used during these therapy sessions to promote emotional growth through a special bond that the riders and horses share.”

She said that volunteers are welcome to contact her if they would like to assist with sessions. “The staff and casual helpers are all actively involved with the therapeutic sessions. These sessions require a leader to lead the horse and two helpers to keep the rider on each horse.”

The association currently has 10 horses and two donkeys, and Morris said they are looking for people to sponsor a horse or a donkey. “We urgently need donations and sponsorships. The organisation can not function without these funds.”
