Honeydew Police teamed up with other law enforcement agencies to raid greenbelts in the area.
In a joint operation on Thursday 27 February, Metro Police and security companies ADT, Beagle Watch, Londoloza, SRT, Busicor, Chubb and Gauteng Security cleaned up spots that were identified to be frequented by vagrants.
Honeydew Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said they raided these fields because there had been an increase in house break-ins close to the greenbelts.
The greenbelts raided include the ones adjacent to Van Staden Road and Panorama Cemetery in Wilgeheuwel respectively; Hillfox Value Centre in Weltevreden Park; and the intersection of Christiaan De Wet and Hendrik Potgieter roads in Strubens Valley. The veld on Beyers Naudé Drive and N1 in Randpark Ridge; and President Fouche and CR Swart in Kelly Ridge were also on the itinerary.
Police dismantled 10 sleeping areas and arrested 15 people. Jacobs explained that because they often have greenbelt operations, the number of arrests was low.
“It could be that most of them have totally moved out of the area,” she said.
The arrested vagrants’ fingerprints were taken to see if they could be linked to any unsolved crimes.
