The controversial DA march for “real jobs”, that initially was intended to end at Luthuli House but then moved to Beyers Naudé Square, has erupted in violence.
According to reports ANC supporters started marching in the streets parallel to the ones where the DA had their march. ANC supporters started running towards DA marchers at the corner of Marshall and Rissik Streets and started throwing rocks at the police. There are allegations that petrol bombs were thrown as well and the police had to launch several stun grenades.
Police stopped the march at noon saying it was too dangerous to continue. Although the DA had permission for their march the ANC’s gathering was illegal.
The marchers were re-routed to the starting point, the Westgate transport hub.
