Nine employees missing in Doornkop mine fire
Harmony management contacting employees underground to locate missing employees.
Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (Harmony) reported an underground fire at the Doornkop gold mine near Slovoville, the Harmony International Rectifier (IR) told the Record on Wednesday 5 February.
Contact has been made with eight of the employees in a refuge bay, the press release reads.
“Efforts continue to reach these employees and to establish the whereabouts of a further nine employees who currently are unaccounted for.
“The fire was reported to have occurred in a stope adjacent to 192 level haulage at around 6pm on Tuesday 4 February,” it is reported.
The haulage is reported to be around 1 733 metres underground.
“Rescue teams immediately were dispatched underground, but access to the affected area is hampered by smoke and a subsequent fall of ground.”
Harmony IR says that operations at the mine have been suspended to get the crisis under control.
The Record will report once further updates are available.
