Too much water and no water at all

CONSTANTIA KLOOF - Burst main water line leaves residents without water, burst water metre sees water streaming down the road.

Residents in Constantia Kloof North and Weltevreden Park were plagued by serious water problems that began on 25 January.

First, one of the water mains running underneath Constantia Drive burst and left the residents living between Constantia Drive and Hendrik Potgieter without water. Three Jojo water tanks were set up in the area to supply water to the residents for basic sanitation.

On Wednesday 29 January Councillor Indrid Reinten was on site to investigate and ensure Rand Water did everything they could to see that the water supply returned to the area. By 8pm that evening, the water supply had been restored, although the short stretch of road on Constantia Drive was left badly damaged.

“Now it’s up to Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to see that the road surface is restored properly,” said Reinten.

On 25 January, a mere two blocks away in Bergpruim Street, hundreds if not thousands of litres of water poured from a supposedly broken water metre.

Due to Rand Water’s designated maintenance team prioritising the broken pipeline in Constantia Drive, the leak on Bergpruim Street needed to wait.

“Getting them [Rand Water] to fix the problem has been very frustrating,” stated Allen Rigney who lives on Bergpruim Street. “It’s been leaking vast amounts of water and they haven’t been able to tell me what caused the problem. I feel like they were just sending me from pillar to post.”

Rigney resorted to placing bags of sand at the entrance to his yard to stop the water from flooding his garden even more than it already had. “My whole garden was flooded, flower beds, trampoline, everything.”

Rand Water has since investigated the matter and is currently in the process of fixing it.
