Liquor law gets broken ‘legally’

Gauteng Liquor Board as elusive as an eel.

Various residents have complained to both the Record and Councillor Gert Niemand over a period of time about a liquor outlet in Stumke Street.

Residents are not against the liquor store or its owners per se but the fact that the location of the liquor store is in breach of the Gauteng Liquor Act, which clearly states that no liquor may be sold within 500m of a place of worship or school.

This is where it gets suspicious. The Record visited the liquor store and it has had a valid liquor licence for the past eight years, yet it is sandwiched between a church and a school in a residential area.

The Record spent hours trying to get a contact number for the Gauteng Liquor Board in order to get comment but to no avail. Niemand says he has the same problem.

Residents who has a problem with such outlets can lay a complaint at the Gauteng Liquor Board. That is if they answer their telephones. The number is 011 355 8158 or 011 355 8083 or 011 355 8793.
