Crime vs. property values

Paul Everitt sheds light on the matter of crime against property values.

It is a well-known fact that the level of crime in a suburb has a direct influence as far as property values are concerned and this has never been more evident with crime spiralling out of control. Even our local police, whom are hopelessly understaffed, are unable to stop this epidemic. More than ever good security has become paramount on the prospective purchasers list of requirements when reviewing potential properties.

With serious crimes such as armed robberies and home invasions happening more regularly it almost seems that society is becoming more and more desensitised to these occurrences even though these become more and more serious if left unchecked.

The responsibility lies with each one of us to do whatever possible to create a neighbourhood where we can all live in harmony, secure in the knowledge that we have all done what we can to protect the lives of those that we love so dearly, our families.

So where do we start? In ancient times villages were protected by every citizen becoming a part of the solution by living by the sword. Violence was everywhere yet these communities thrived as they had the assurance that if you harmed one of their members, this instance would be addressed by all and the community would rise up as one and deal with the perpetrators immediately by sending out a clear message that crime would not be tolerated.

Fortunately Randpark Ridge already has these community forums in place. Made up of concerned people that care enough for their communities to give up their time and commit to making Randpark Ridge as safe as they possibly can by keeping their members informed and vehicle patrols and other measures in place, all in an effort to help deter the crime problem .

The problem however lies in the fact that nearly 50 percent of the residents in Randpark Ridge do not subscribe or belong to the RRVA or RRRA and therefor there is a huge security breach within the suburb. It is this breach which gives way to allowing continuous outbreaks of crime which impact directly on the status quo of the suburbs we live in.

I therefore implore you as existing shareholders in the fight against crime to encourage your neighbours in your street to subscribe to the existing neighbourhood watch and stand and be counted.

As the majority of criminal operations are as a result of inside information and participation I and Harcourts as part of our contribution to the homeowners have set up a screening of existing and new employees and tenants to give you that additional peace of mind, all you need to do is send me and email with the name and id number of the person you would like a criminal background check on. This would be done in confidence and you would receive an answer within 48 hours or sooner if requested.

This report will indicate if the person has a criminal record and the nature of that record, if they are wanted on suspicion of a certain crime and a recommendation from Honeydew SAP in the event that they do have a record.

For a much more detailed report on any individual there will be a fee involved of R30 (thirty rand) it would then involve finger prints otherwise the basic screening is free of charge.

In my opinion you cannot put a price on those you love so start with becoming a solution, join your local residents association today! Not only is the membership fee tax deductible but will also continue to make Randpark Ridge a sought after area to live in.
