Police prepare for silly season
A security campaign to educate the public on safety at shopping malls
In preparation for the festive season, the Honeydew police, together with Fidelity Security, held a crime awareness campaign at Clearwater Mall. The campaign ran from 22 to 24 November and was aimed at providing residents with important safety tips, particularly mall-related.
Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs of the Honeydew Police Station explained it was common for criminals to target shoppers during the festive season, which was why the campaign was held at Clearwater. According to Jacobs, more campaigns have been planned at other shopping malls.
There was an exhibition and pamphlets were handed out, and the public was able to question the police on various issues.
A play area was provided for children and Jacobs said this was the police’s way of showing children that police officers are not monsters. “Children are scared of the police and that is dangerous because in an unfortunate situation where they are in trouble they don’t want to come to police officers for help,” Jacobs said.
The campaign was received positively. Resident Willie Meyer said the various questions he had regarding the police and police protocol were answered. “I’m glad the police came to where we are, I just moved into the area and didn’t know which sector I belong to and how sectors work, now I know because the police explained it to me.”
