Woman of Substance Awards held at Silverstar Casino
Businesswomen across the West Rand honoured for their welfare work
The Woman of Substance Awards were held at Silverstar Casino on 16 November. Here, respected businesswomen from across the West Rand were hailed for their contributions to their respective communities.
The chosen beneficiary for this year’s awards was The Roodepoort Child and Family Welfare Society, for whom the Woman of Substance Ambassadors had to collect funds throughout the past year. The society was established in 1930 at present 80% of its efforts are directed at Aids orphans.
Third place went to Thea van der Nest, while second place was taken by Abigail Kokone. Artist Kim Ikel, who donated one of her paintings for the evening’s auction, took first place. She received a white orchid pendant by designer Alex Hyslop, among other prizes, for the significant funds she had raised for the charity.
The evening’s emcee Andrew Webster also acted as music director. He assembled a host of top-class artists; including Granville Michaels, Nonhlanthla, Letoya Mangezi, Lisa Katszke and Sindi Nene; and even took to the stage himself. Tenor Hardus Hartzenberg serenaded the ladies with his version of The Gypsy Kings’ “Volare”.
