Northsiders get registered

Residents flock to registration stations

First-time voters and new residents to the Northside area made their way to voting stations to register on 8 and 9 November to ensure they have their say in next year’s elections. South Africans who will vote for the first time next year looked forward to the experience of registering, like 20-year-old Darren Fan Ourakis from Radiokop. “I couldn’t wait for this day to arrive, I was not sure what to expect but I’m quite pleased with what happened,” Ourakis said.

Most residents applauded the service at all registration stations; the process was quick and easy and for the most part queues were short. “In less than 10 minutes I was done with my registration, I couldn’t believe this,” said a happy Ivan Tau, who registered at Charterhouse school.

Some young voters were accompanied by their parents, like Nicole Ledingham who registered at Strubens Valley library “I wanted to show her support and let her know that this is something important to do,” Ledingham’s mother Dawn explained.

Some stations, however, did stir up slight annoyance, when residents arrived only to be told they were at the wrong station. “I literally stay a few steps away from Strubens Valley library, but I’m told that I should go to Charterhouse, which is far from where I stay,” said angry resident Hazel Monareng.
